DC and Warner Bros begin development on a Supergirl film.
A writer has been hired to pen the script for yet another DC universe property as Warner Bros. continues to throw all of its eggs in the basket. This week, Supergirl gets the spotlight. The distant cousin of Clark Kent from Krypton, Supergirl already has a television series based at The CW, and Oren Uziel will take on screenplay duties for a big screen interpretation.
Uziel is best known for work on 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox, though the writer has a plethora of source material to mine from for this project. The character of Kara Zor-El has existed in DC Comics material since 1959 when she debuted in Action Comics #252. As well as the television series, which is currently gearing up for its Season 4 premiere this October, Supergirl has once before had a big screen adaptation.
The 1984 film, which starred Faye Dunaway, Peter O’Toole and Mia Farrow and was directed by Jeannot Szwarc, was poorly received by critics and audiences alike. It holds a 10% Rotten Tomatoes score pulled from 29 critic reviews. It did however receive a Blu-Ray release from the Warner Archive Collection this July. The two-disc set includes a 1080p HD remaster of the International Cut, and the Director’s Cut on Standard Definition DVD.
Warner Bros. is currently developing a handful of female-led DC properties. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn headlines a Birds of Prey film, and Batgirl remains in development with Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson on-board despite the exit of Joss Whedon from the project. In the short-term, however, is James Wan’s Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, which dives into theaters late December.
