New Ghost in the Shell animated series details revealed.
Becoming increasingly relevant, the Ghost in the Shell franchise has proven its durability and will now bounce back after a much criticised 2017 live-action adaptation.
Confirmed at San Diego Comic Con, a new series is in development with an outline for two seasons consisting of twelve episodes each. The first season will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is most notable for his work on the 2002-03 series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) will take the reins on Season 2.
The news was delivered by Production I.G. USA president Maki Terashima-Furuta, and it’s still early days on the production. No titles for the individual seasons have been confirmed, nor is it clear which director is handling which season.
Ghost in the Shell was originally created by Masamune Shirow, and the three-volume manga series was later adapted into the 1995 animated film directed by Mamoru Oshii. That film received a sequel nine years later, and from there the franchise has only evolved.
The series follows the Public Security Section 9 Cyberterror Enforcement Team that’s led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, a woman living in a cybernetic body. It’s notable that the film, subsequent television series (Stand Alone Complex, Arise), and more recently released anime film subtitled The New Movie do not exist in the same universe. Rather, each is its own unique interpretation of the source material.
