The Russo Brothers discuss how much of Thanos’ back-story we’ll see in Avengers: Infinity War.
With the movie a decade in the making, there’s one thing we know for sure about Avengers: Infinity War and that’s that we are finally going to get to see a whole lot of Thanos, who so far has only been teased in brief cameo appearances throughout the Marvel Studios films leading up to this point in the overarching story they’re telling.
But we may not be seeing as much of him as was initially planned to be shown. During the summer of last year, the Russo Brothers teased that they planned on including a lot of backstory of The Mad Titan, but it seems that will now not be the case in the finished film. In a recent interview Anthony Russo explained how a fair amount of the footage concerning Thanos’ past has ended up on the cutting room floor;
“We were considering showing (Thanos’) backstory, but ultimately felt it wasn’t necessary for the movie… (Infinity War is still) told from his point of view.”
Whilst this may seem disappointing for some, it has to be pointed out that the Russo’s have the unenviable task of telling multiple stories for a virtual cavalcade of superheroes and it appears that they are willing to make the tough editorial decisions to ensure that everybody gets their chance to play a part in their involvement in the war to save the universe.
With flashes of some of Thanos’ backstory seen in the trailers, it’s probably safe to assume we will still get some details on what lead the character to his desire to rule the universe and the actor taking on the role, James Brolin, was quick to offer some insight into his character’s motivations;
“He’s different from his family. They’re all Titans and they all look similar, but he was born deformed. You see how he grew up, you see he was like the Quasimodo of this time, or if you’ve ever read Perfume (Patrick Süskind ‘s 1985 novel about a serial killer who craves beautiful scenes but is disgusted by the smell of humanity), it’s a great parallel to Thanos. He stuck out. He was an anomaly. He was a freak. And that lent to this apparent insanity.”
Another factor that is intriguing Marvel fans is the lack of any sign of Hawkeye in the trailers so far and again Anthony Russo was quick to pacify any concerns whilst still keeping his cards tight to his directorial chest;
“All will be explained when people see the movie.”
Avengers: Infinity War opens across the U.K. April 26th and in the US the following day.
