The Dark Tower TV show still going ahead.

It appears that the plans for the Dark Tower franchise are still going ahead, following less than favourable reviews of the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s series of novels. There have been rumours of a planned TV show but the reception the film has garnered was thought to have put these rumours to rest but apparently now this isn’t the case.

THR have announced that The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara will be the showrunner on the TV version of The Dark Tower. The show will apparently show a different part of Roland’s story documenting his first adventure as a young gunslinger as told in the fourth book of the series, Wizard And Glass. It appears the television show will provide an origin story for the character portrayed by Idris Elba in the movie. It is unknown at this time who will be cast in this role.

“I’ve been a Stephen King fan for decades, and the opportunity to adapt The Dark Tower as a TV series is a great honor,” Mazzara told THR. “The events of The Gunslinger, Wizard And Glass, The Wind Through The Keyhole and other tales need a long format to capture the complexity of Roland’s coming of age, how he became the Gunslinger, how Walter became the Man in Black, and how their rivalry cost Roland everything and everyone he ever loved. I could not be more excited to tell this story. It feels like being given the key to a treasure chest. And oh yeah, we’ll have billy-bumblers!”

MRC and Sony Pictures are set to finance the first season of the show which is slated to begin shooting later this year. The first season is expected to have between ten to thirteen episodes, the two companies having already collaborated on the movie version. There has been no announcement whether any of the actors from the film adaptation will have any involvement in the series.
