HBO’s True Detective set to return for a third season.

True Detective is set to return after HBO confirmed that they have green-lit a third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s crime anthology series Yahoo Movies reports.

The first season of the show which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was a huge hit and whilst many thought that the second season starring Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell failed to hit the same heights, it still pulled in decent ratings and the network still considered it a success.

The third season will be written solely by Pizzolatto (as was the first season) with the exception of episode four which he co wrote with David Milch. It is unconfirmed how many episodes this season will contain, but the previous two seasons consisted of eight episodes each. This third season will star Oscar winning actor Mahershala Ali (Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight – 2017). The synopsis for the third season is as follows;

“Season 3 of True Detective will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.”

Pizzolatto will also make his directorial debut during this season with other episodes being directed by Jeremy Saulnier (The Green Room). HBO president Casey Bloys was quoted as saying,

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective.”

There has been no official announcement of a broadcast date and Pizzolatto is still currently writing the final episodes but he stated he was thrilled with the prospect to be be working with such fine talent,

“I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy. I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”

Both McConaughey and Harrelson are set to be co-producers of the show as per the last two seasons.
