Disney boss Bob Iger gives assurances that Deadpool 2 will be R-rated.

So then, Disney has finally purchased Fox in an unprecedented deal which means that the X-Men can finally meet the Avengers. But what about everybody’s favourite Merc with a mouth? Will the purchase of the rights to Deadpool mean that any future Deadpool films released under the Disney umbrella will become more family friendly?

Thankfully, it seems that the answer to that is “no” with Disney head Bob Iger confirming that the studio is happy to allow the R-rated exploits of Wade Wilson carry on unmolested. In a call with investors following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Iger addressed the future of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds’ foul mouthed and extremely lucrative R-rated Marvel franchise at Fox.

“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

Fox have of course proven that there is definitely a big market for R-rated comic book films, with both the first instalment of Deadpool and Logan performing admirably at the box office and garnering praise from the critics to boot.

With the purchase costing Disney well over $50 billion, they would indeed be wise not to mess with this winning formula if they are looking to recoup some of that cash back courtesy of the Deadpool franchise and its planned X-Force spin-off and thankfully, it looks like they are willing to allow it to continue in the same vein.

Deadpool 2 (title to be confirmed) is currently due for release June 1st 2018.
