Baby Driver passes $100 million in US Box Office.

With his latest feature film Baby Driver passing the $100 million mark in the US, director Edgar Wright has expressed his joy at the film’s success. He told Variety magazine;

“Even if I wasn’t involved in Baby Driver I would be thrilled, encouraged and inspired that an original film connected with mainstream audiences in this franchise heavy summer. I made it to be seen on the big screen and I’m so glad the audiences turned up (some many times). I have to thank my hard working producers, crew and cast for bringing this script to the screen and making a long dreamt of movie come true. And endless kudos to all at MRC, Tristar and Sony for having enough faith in my creation to A. make it and B. proudly put in the middle of the summer season.”

The film which stars Kevin Spacey, John Hamm and Jamie Fox has proven a good combination along with its lead actor Ansel Elgort. Outside of the US it has also fared well with a further $67 million overseas take being reported. Pretty impressive when other markets are still open with release still to happen in Japan, Russia, China, Italy, and South Korea.

The feature, which was made on a budget of $34 million by Sony Pictures, has performed way above the studio’s expectations and has also garnered a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Wright stated on the Adam Buxton podcast recently that this film had been in gestation in some form or another for over a decade and that he had been trying for years to get into production. Wright also stated that he had always had the idea on the back burner whilst prepping the Ant-Man movie that he eventually walked away from due to creative differences with Marvel Studios.
The director also recently hinted that there is a possibility of a sequel to Baby Driver. Speaking on Empire’s film podcast,

“‘I sort of have an idea for a sequel. The studio has asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters.”

Speaking of an ongoing story for the character played by Elgort, Wright said,

“Baby has got to a new place. Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go. I think with Baby Driver there’s more that you can do in that realm and I sort of have an idea that if you did another you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not the apprentice anymore”.
