Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to helm new Star Wars films.
Social media is alive today with the news that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creative writing team behind the biggest TV show on the planet, Game Of Thrones, are to work on new Star Wars films.
They will start work on the new show as soon as they finish the final season of Game Of Thrones early in 2019. Lucasfilm head honcho, Kathleen Kennedy, said that Benioff and Weiss were hired because there are “some of the best storytellers working today”.
She continued: “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
The new project will undoubtedly mark a departure from their current reliance on brutal violence and nudity as there is little doubt Lucasfilm would want to retain the current focus on family friendly fare. Benioff and Weiss released a statement saying, “In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.”
This won’t be the first time there has been a cross-over from Westeros to that far away galaxy; Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) has starred in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi whist Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) will soon be seen in the upcoming spin-off film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Whether this new film or series of films will run alongside the upcoming trilogy to be made under the supervision of The Last Jedi Director, Rian Johnson remains to be seen. Given Benioff and Weiss’ writing heritage, we’d love to see an adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic. No doubt we’ll have more to report on this soon.
